Turkish Cypriots residents in the TRNC cannot vote for (vice) president or parliament in the South but can vote in the EU elections. This is the embarrassing mess we are in. Welcome to the complexities of the Middle East, civil war, post-colonialism.

The reason for this [one of many ofc] is that in 1964 the T/C MPs left parliament permanently. As per the constitution of Cyprus there were specific MPs that had to be T/C and could only be voted for by T/Cs Cypriots [so ethnoreligious groupings were/are constitutionally upheld].

Just wanna end this on a positive note — good news! "[Niyazi Kizilyurek's] election was of paramount importance [...] because he was the first Turkish Cypriot to be elected but because he was elected by both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots."https://cyprus-mail.com/2019/05/27/turkish-cypriot-mep-hails-bicommunual-cooperation/ …

Cyprus confuses me. I’m admittedly very ignorant on the country’s history. I thought the north declared independence awhile back?

It did but nobody (not the UN, EU, Republic) legally recognises it, except Turkey. They only recognise one legal country on the island, meaning they should let Turkish Cypriot resident in the TRNC to vote.

If you don't know the history though, it's probably impossible to explain over Twitter.

I'm in London. Ha! But I assume you mean what ethnicity am I classed as? I was classed as non-Cypriot and fought to be recognised as Cypriot (my mum is classed as Greek Cypriot).

The law changed in 1999 (from being purely patrilineal decent) and I finally got Cypriot (Republic) citizenship late last year/early this year. So I think what you want to know is where am I from? South.

By fought though, I mean I waited 10 years and then asked nicely. Others went to courts and won landmark cases for me.

As a kid I took a lot of the "you're not like us" and internalised it.
