Sometimes I say lay-tex other times I say lay-tek.
Sometimes I say soo-doo other times I say soo-doh.
BUT I WILL DIE BEFORE I SAY jif for gif. Anybody else like that?

It literally is, with new words. Soft g, especially when followed by an “i”, is a thing in English. I used to pronounce it with a hard g myself, but I wasn’t so arrogant to think that my assumptions should trump the person who named it.
