As a person who is technically both a Cypriot and a *London* Cypriot now (you should hear how I say [μ]πάνιο now!) I am ofc obsessed with meeting Cypriots.
Even in Cyprus last week I had to inhibit asking people “Oh, you’re Cypriot? Me too!” because of course they were!

This isn't Cypriot Greek from Cyprus, it's paroikia stuff. My great grandmother who was American Cypriot (NY, USA, originally Lefkara, Cyprus) also used to say panio instead of banio. I think it's a natural process that occurs when surrounded by English-speakers? CC

I also accidentally have said palooni instead of baloni.

It's obviously interference from balloon. The time I said palooni, I laughed and I said (mainly to myself) "Oh, it's baloni... so what's 'ball' in Greek? Oh! Riiiight."
