I just read a tweet where someone asked Bill Nye advice for women in science. Out of all the possible empowering things he could have said, he says “learn algebra.” I feel all kinds of way about this bc all my upper level math didn’t do shit to fight the inequalities I faced.

Like I learned math so well, I knew when my male counterpart got paid more than me. Yep, that def helped me succeed. Like are YOU FAWKING KIDDING ME. Women can do all the maths, it’s the shit math we deal with when it comes to our lives as women in science.

Anyways, Bill Nye can suck it because when young women ask me that question, my answer is “If you can do it, you deserve it. If you want it, you deserve it. Your work is enough no matter the failures you face. Keep your head up and never let anyone tell you otherwise.” #STEM

I have a screenshot of the tweet but I don’t want to pick on some random teacher who didn’t know better. I’m not going to throw her under the bus.

But “learning algebra” is also a great STEM education plug ya know to those who don’t know better. We need to admit that’s not the problem. Plenty of educated women in sci. For example, I know a SpEd teacher who has a Mechanical Eng degree. She had all the maths, still left.

I get this all the time. "It's OK Olivia, we are training women to do computational modelling now". I've started to reply now by saying: "please stop sending canaries down a poisonous mine — it doesn't fix the the problem, you just get a bunch of dead canaries!"

Wisdom right there. Now, rectifying the numerous national superfund sites littered around California? Don't glare. How do we transmute? The poisons for those who cannot compute?
