Can we make a new rule where of you colonize a country you immediately grant all residents of that country free access to your country, including the right to live and work? It's only fair! Shared national wealth? Wouldn't be bad either! Works in retrospect too. Good system.

No member of the Commonwealth outside of the UK has free access to live and work in England, though!

(Except Gibraltar, Malta, Cyprus, but that's because they are in EU.) Importantly, and of course if I remember and understand correctly, in the past you could slowly become a British subject from being, e.g., a Cypriot citizen. That's how lots of people escaped the war in Cyprus.

Basically you slowly ascended the ranks until you got to British citizen, typically starting from subject. It's not as you describe in the OP of course, which is a more wholesome thing and which I agree with 100%.

A few of my ancestors and friends ancestors did it to escape the war. That's why there's a lot of Cypriots with UK passports and why there's as many Cypriots outside Cyprus in UK/Oz than inside it in the present. In part this and the EU has caused serious brain drain too.
