Future PhDs: Before accepting a job offer, do your research. Check how many PhDs quit on this supervisor and why (verify this!), check what former employees are doing now, ask around in the institute for supervisor reputation, do not just go by first impression or online persona!

Any tips on how to figure out how many students quit/who they are? It doesn't strike me as the type of info they'd give out (willingly or honestly)

I don't know about the attitude of other people, but if someone was considering doing a PhD with a PI from any of the institutions where I've worked and they sent me an email asking whether I could give them any information, then I either would or refer them to the right people..

Yup! Also arguably, it's just as important to see if graduated students still collaborate with their PI and where they are placed, which is MUCH easier to discover online.
