Some news... Very pleased to announce that today was just a normal day. I spent 20 minutes figuring out whether “latest_version.doc” or “latest_MS.doc” was the latest version, reset my online manuscript submission password, and googled “R stats chi test” for the umpteenth time

Paperpile reference software has a plug-in for chrome and gdocs. I've been really happy with it and made converts of my whole team. For figure captions..... Everywhere I ever submitted required them separate so...? And/or you could insert a drawing, at least for the preprint.
-
How much do you pay monthly and what does a diff look like?
-
Paperpile licenses are sliding scale so we pay more for a business license but apparently it's $3/month for academic license. Version control with gdocs looks a lot like track changes or compare docs with word or diffs with arcanist.
-
But gdoc version control is automatic and sequential. I'm guessing there might be an option to compare docs or versions that you select out of order but not sure.
-
There is also a track changes like editing option ("suggesting"). I like that with permissions control you require that collaborator edits be suggestions
Ok I'm done being an unpaid spokesperson for Googe docs

version control not the epithet
Still haven’t found a straightforward solution for using Git for papers with lots of co-authors who don’t use Git, however...
