He wasn't. He was calling commoners chimps. Maybe read what he said.

“Was supposed to be joke about royals vs circus animals in posh clothes” that’s from the article you shared, he’s not said anything in that about commoners that I can see, although I’m probably wrong.

I think the difference here is whether you accept that he was being ignorant as he says he was, or if you think he was being intentionally malicious. I think the latter doesn't make sense given quick apology & removing the tweet & clearly being distressed to be associated with

extreme racism. But then others in this thread seem to disagree and think he had malicious racist intent

Cynical people would think he had the reaction planned incase it got flipped this way.

TBH I don't think we agree on how interpret racist acts, not on if he had a mens rea. I don't think the mens rea is relevant here at all because it's not a court and because racist acts don't need a mens rea to be classed as racism.

Basically, I don't think the BBC sacking him is wrong and I also don't think it matters what his intent was because this is not a court. If you want to take this to court and find out what the law says, a mens rea is not the only way to determine hate speech in the UK.

Either way malice or intent to me in this specific case are red herrings.

Anyway maybe this is a good thing to link to here so the context of how racism of this sort plays out is understood:https://twitter.com/CharleneWhite/status/1126424116389666816 …

This is what I was saying. Given the context of the baby having one mixed race parent, the tweet was obviously going to have racist undertones, regardless of “intent”. You previously said he was calling commoners chimps but I am yet to see that. Not saying it doesn’t exist.

I explained it to you.

I can’t see your explanation in this thread, sorry. I also agree that we don’t need intent to make something racist. Racism being born of ignorance is something that is becoming all the more problematic in our society.
