Today I asked my partner about his feelings on getting a vasectomy. He said he had mixed feelings about it because it looked uncomfortable. So I rage explained to him the many ways in which getting an IUD is extremely painful. A thread. 1/

First, you’re told to take ibuprofen 30 minutes before the procedure. Are you shitting me? This is Vicodin level bullshit that we’re about to experience. We get NO pain numbing, nothing. 2/

Next, you get your vagina and butt right into the doctors face so they can crank your vagina open to make it easier to access the cervix. This is normal for people who get papsmeres. It’s uncomfortable, not painful yet. 3/

Next they do a “sounding” - this means they insert what is essentially a stick into your cervix a few times to make sure it’s big enough for an IUD. THIS HURTS SO MUCH. It’s like the most severe and acute cramping I’ve ever felt. It doesn’t take long but FUCK. 4/

After this they’re like, “Cool, big enough even tho you haven’t had a baby. Let’s do this.” And then they take the IUD with it’s cute little arms folded down and place that into your cervix. By this time it’s just like, “Let’s get this over with.” 5/

Surprise! This hurts a lot too. They place the IUD into your cervix and then the little arms pop out. So it’s like FUCK THAT HURTS... oh it’s over thank god (then the arms spring open) OWWW WTF” 6/

And then it’s over. They trim the strings on the IUD so it’s easy to check them yourself (side note, it’s not easy) and you’re free to go! But really, it doesn’t end there. You can continue to few major, painful cramping for a few days at least. Again, ibuprofen is suggested 7/

You know how it is for people with a vas defrens to get a vasectomy? It’s a 30 min procedure. They get numbed instantly. They feel some tugging and pulling, but no pain. And from what I’ve heard it feels a little tender/uncomfortable for a few days and then it’s over. 8/

People who get IUDs that last 5 years (hormonal version, eg Mirena) or 10 years (copper version, no hormones, eg Paraguard) still continue to get IUDs despite the pain because many doctors won’t just tie off our tubes - plus this surgery is major compared to a vasectomy. 9/

So, I am excited that Vasalgel will hopefully make it to the US market soon (a shot that goes into vas defrens and will tear apart sperm that pass through on electrical charge alone and is reversible), but where the fuck is the pain management for people getting IUDs?? 10/10

No way under the sun I would ever get an IUD. Not specifically because of the pain but because of the whole "medical practitioners overall treat women like shit" thing.
