This article hit a nerve with me. Years ago, I thought "I'm not being discriminated against due to my gender, what are these other (older) women talking about? I'll just work really hard and earn a place at the table." I am embarrassed that I thought that. I know better now.https://twitter.com/MalloryLPickett/status/1118887697001488384 …

I thought we all start on equal footing and the best of us (regardless of gender) get a seat at the table. I was naive. I was only considering one side of the equation. Here's the other: who gets a seat on the table is decided by those who are already there. They have power.

Like it or not, people hire people who look like them and they can identify with. So, with 68% of tenured faculty at elite public universities being men, the odds are stacked against women (and I can only imagine the skew due to race).https://twitter.com/FreeformTV/status/1116491116910608384 …

I didn't want to go the TT route for unrelated reasons. It just makes me sad that this is the state of affairs in this place that I had on a pedestal for so many years, and I am so mad for the women who are amazing and want to be in academia.

Like Jones and Emerson, I have hope that the culture will change for the better. But unlike them, I am realizing early on that hope alone is not enough. Women can't afford to be polite about it anymore, and men can't pretend that this is not a problem. We all need to push back.
