About five years ago I spent an entire weekend finally learning to see them. The joke above was worth it :)

It took me about 30 seconds, most of which were spent wondering if it was possible with text.

It’s some sort of skill then? Like black magic?

You have to unfocus your eyes and just wait. That's all I can say to describe the process of seeing it. Where were you in the 90s though?

I think that's why computer screens or placing them behind glass helps - the reflective surface makes it easier to focus on something the distance (and therefore unfocused on the image itself).

Makes sense. I like unfocusing my eyes generally. Feels relaxing. And as you say, it's super easy to do if you are looking at something far away.

Olivia I’ve been focusing my eyes on that picture for 2 minutes now and nothing happens. I feel like this is some cruel prank half the world is in on and the rest of us just think they pop out but we can’t see it.

It's hard to describe, but try focusing just in front and just behind, keep changing the exact depth. At some point you should start to see edges appear.

I find that trying to get the repeating pattern to fall over itself through unfocusing (seeing double, then overlapping the doubles) helps

That's how I do it. I love doing that generally. It's kind of relaxing.
