Interesting demographics for grad students, postdocs & PIs in psych. many women PhDs; more men as postdocs. Trainees are diverse; The professorate is not. My dept is 2/3 male, nearly all white. So when we say "what a great job!" I wonder how that sounds to our diverse trainees?

Yes. I've been following discussion on Twitter re pros & cons of academic careers. I think if I were a trainee who was not a white male & I saw a department of mostly older white men saying how great it was to be a PI, I think it would make me feel even more like an outsider

In any event, I would really like to see us do better.... We are by some measures, our junior hires far more diverse than before

And in a way it makes sense how the professorate looks like. The full professors of today are the grad students of 20-40 years ago, and I bet those were mostly white men. Anyone got sources about the demographics 20-40 years ago?

As a counterpoint, my grad school cohort (c. 2005) was exactly 50/50. *Mumble* years on, all four men are still in academic research (2 in the US, 2 abroad), while all four women have left. That doesn't look great.

On the other hand, the woman in consulting and the woman in biotech certainly make much, much more than me. The one in publishing seems to have a fantastic work-life balance (ditto for the woman at the teaching center), while I'm working on figures. All four seem happy, so....

I don't know what to make of it. Academia should be an option for everyone who wants it, regardless of gender. But it's a weird career in that it's great in some ways and absolutely wretched in others.
