Yes, and sorry I know this is super hindsight information, no help now. These apps can prevent turning off, but spoof being turned off while still allowing you to connect remotely, to record sound, images and GPS. They have to rip the battery out /hard reset to stop it.

So when they steal it they hit the off button and it doesn't turn off?

Yes, Cerebrus has a fake shutdown feature. It only works on android though.

And if your 'root' your device you can make it uninstallable, and set it to autostart GPS tracking - so even a factory reset won't stop it.

I see it's 5 euros per year. I'll think about it because I have insurance anyways now.

I mean, it's probably not going to get your phone back - but you get to harass and scare them for revenge. Also, sorry that this has happened - it seems crazy that tech hasn't solved this problem already.

I don't know if you're aware of how they work in London. The steal 10s of phones in one go and stash them often in a secret place like in a disgusting backpack in a park.

Only if the owners know to ask their provider for the IMEIs of course... But yeah, I'm thinking about it. The likelihood of it happening to me again given just the fact of how upset it made me and that I know where the hot-spot near my work is (and so can avoid) is low...
