Agreed. It hasn't really been explained what needs fixing here. The biggest problem with computational theory work is that there's not enough of it. Once we solve that problem, then other issues might be apparent

This is a huge jump. Saying that a science has social conventions and that conventions need to be discussed/consciously implemented/changed is very far from saying science should be authoritarian.
-
I didn't make the jump you think. I am claiming that saying "science needs something akin to a police force" is authoritarian. Inherently so IMHO.
-
Oh, we're still at the city metaphor. I thought that was settled. I just don't want us to go down the rabbit hole "if there are any social conventions that direct research = authoritarian", because that's a strawman.
-
It's also a strawman of me to say I said that.
I completely want a dialogue on social conventions and I think they can be a force for good as well as good science. -
I am literally the person (among many) who gets called a feminazi/SJW/crybaby or whatever for calling out some of the bad/new social conventions and for asking for a dialogue on improving our social conventions.
-
Sure, I had a feeling we were misunderstanding each other, not yet at a point of actual disagreement. The limits of this damned platform, eh? :)

I mean I can think of many examples of authoritarian science and it went badly and people died. also just to be clear, the fact that rules might appeal is not exactly the same as an authoritarian, but I think "police" as a metaphor indicates an authoritarian stance.
-
In most of the institutions I've worked in, departments have grown up with the sole purpose of setting and enforcing standards. In some cases, I was brought in as a consultant with a not-very-hidden agenda of acting as a counter-authority to break their stranglehold.
