If you have an android there are tools to identify thieves like Cerebrus. It can take photos/audio/gps when someone tries to unlock. Nothing is 100%, but gives you the best chance. It can also read out messages aloud, and spoof a reset (so it still tracks location).

It's off.
-
Yes, and sorry I know this is super hindsight information, no help now. These apps can prevent turning off, but spoof being turned off while still allowing you to connect remotely, to record sound, images and GPS. They have to rip the battery out /hard reset to stop it.
-
So when they steal it they hit the off button and it doesn't turn off?
-
Yes, Cerebrus has a fake shutdown feature. It only works on android though.
-
And if your 'root' your device you can make it uninstallable, and set it to autostart GPS tracking - so even a factory reset won't stop it.
-
I see it's 5 euros per year. I'll think about it because I have insurance anyways now.
-
I mean, it's probably not going to get your phone back - but you get to harass and scare them for revenge. Also, sorry that this has happened - it seems crazy that tech hasn't solved this problem already.

Argh. I'm so sorry that really does suck. Was this near UCL?
-
Yes. Ensleigh Street. Happened to a few people in this area that I know. Was only a matter of time...
-
Arghhh. I really need to be more careful

-
Not it that will necessarily help, but I'm usually wafting my phone all over the place on my way in
-
I doubt it's the way in. Everybody seems to have it done to them on the way out, evening rush hour.
-
Eek. Ok will be on high alert from now on

-
My advice is, if possible, avoid that bit of campus. But of course if you need to walk to Euston Station I've no idea how you can avoid... So maybe keep phone in your pocket... But I mean, victim blaming is a thing and these people are scum.

Urgh so sorry, lost 3 phones to muggers, they are everywhere, even in small German towns...
-
Thanks for saying this. Can't help blame myself a little given all the warnings from people.
-
I don't think it's our fault. It's too easy and tech to discourage theft isn't used or properly developed. Because why stop people buying new phones...

Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear that. Similar thing happened to me and my phone 18mths ago, it was a really horrible and helpless feeling. EE were helpful and able to block the IMEI for me, but of course it can be changed, so
. Feels like more could be done though. -
I wonder why this didn't deter them?
-
Also yeah it sucks. *offers hugs*
