This raises an interesting question. I'm not sure it's a good idea to put theory driven research in a separate category like this, especially since "hyp driven research" is emphasized by e.g. the NIH.

The phrase "hypothesis driven" is a term that has a lot baggage as the best kind of science. So even this revised slide has this property of advocating RR as the best kind of science.

Just wanna butt in to say great work to @JCSkewesDK and @bradpwyble at explaining Danielle's research/point and why pre-reg and RR are not being situated correctly as a tool and why exploratory/confirmatory is not a/the real dissociation.

I mean you kind of did answer it when I told you pre-reg doesn't work for my work you said my modelling is "exploratory", right? But I don't think it is, at least not the same way you would describe an analysis on data...

I did? I don't recall saying that. From memory, you did preface a question about whether RRs could prevent oversampling & deliberate data selection (which led to an interesting pt about p-hacking) by saying that RRs wouldn't be right for your work, and I didn't question that

On the way to the station we (all three) were talking about why I don't pre-reg or RR my modelling work. Loukia said my work was exploratory modelling, I assume you agreed with that but tell me more. And I said it can be seen that a model is a pre-reg.

She did? lol my memory... I do like the idea of thinking of generated models as preregistrations, which could potentially generate predictions testable by others. This seems noncontroversial to me.

I don't think this is controversial in many circles, agreed. I think this is what modellers have been doing for a long time and continue to do and what we do at @ReScienceEds where we literally publish replications of models.

The reason in needs to be said is because I have seen some pretty bizarre stuff — mainly on Twitter — that made me go WTF. I get that non-modellers don't know what we do, and that's actually fine, but they need to let us explain our work more IMHO.

Well I think it's good that you're speaking out about it. Personally, the part of all these discussions re reproducibility that I've enjoyed the most, since getting into this in 2013, is how it's widened my understanding of how different sciences work & what different fields need

Likewise, thanks man. I've learned an absolute TON on here -- more than I can even begin to summarise -- talking to people that I have no shame in admitting are a damn sight smarter & more knowledgeable than I am. And I'm trying as much as poss to turn that to something of use.

FWIW I am really excited to listen to the talks from #OpenScienceIMC. Will be a fun and I am sure enlightening experience. And, yes, I have to say I am always pleasantly surprised when these discussions go/end well as I have been in some absolutely pointless ones.
