Something that really strikes me about #OpenScienceIMC - critiques of the ‘open science movement’ often paint the reformers as hackers/pirates/thugs/etc. Yet here there has been nothing but incredible optimism & enthusiasm for the science. It’s not about burning things down.

Great to hear and totally convinced of this. But, pretty sure many of those labels were self-appointed by a small vocal group of open sciencers. Are any of that group even at the OpenScienceIMC?

Thanks for noting this @ArinaBones2. To be honest, I was quite disheartened by reading the OP, especially after this morning's exchange:https://twitter.com/JCSkewesDK/status/1105743245336825856 …

This is why this event has been so important to me and it is a shame to hear. Sorry Danielle.

I mean stating that "oh, these people here are kind and constructive" as evidence that there is no problem with unkindness and destructiveness in the OS movement, when some of those same people have experienced hostility from prominent OS advocates, is kind of frustrating.

Huh? Sorry - I must have these people muted as I haven't seen any negativity in any of the threads related to this event. Or is it somewhere else? I never said that the good event meant that there were no bad apples.

I actually explicitly said that there *are* bad apples and actors, but that those don't define the overall community or it's spirit. And I stand by that - firmly.https://twitter.com/micahgallen/status/1105828720957362176 …

I know there are outliers and bad actors, but I firmly do not believe that the ‘movement’ is about cutting off heads and tearing down things. Is it even a movement... or just the next generation of scientists trying to build a bigger, better, more lasting science?

I don't get the comparison to the Trier event either. ALl the tweets I saw there looked really positive and optimistic. But I block and mute a ton of people so it's possible i've just filtered the offenders out?

I have heard from others that they haven't seen what I have seen and I have noticed those Tweets have little to no replies, I guess Twitter's algorithm is improving. 😂

I’m sorry my point was lost in interpretation. I may regret trying again, but please Micah I believe you can understand: The use of phrase “bad apples” functions to minimize the real problems rather than own our responsibility as community (I’m part of it too) to address them.

Your message seems to want to signal to people outside OS that things are pretty great in OS?Given that ppl in OS who presented at workshop been targetted from within OS, that message seems unhelpful. Cf throwing under the bus. Not your intent! Just explaining impact of message.
