On top of automated backups and version control I always just annotate files with the date of editing (using a new copy per day). Works great!

OK, but using binary files in version control is not really what it's about and that's why you resort to using filenames to track your version... which ends up being not actually using version control in the way it was designed.

Just working on a paper. Shared hit repos and Latex. If that fails I use also version numbers. Liverally counting up. New doc every day at least -- for example when working with Engineers... ;)
