I’ll have to see if I can find the very detailed blogpost that claimed - with evidence - that Julia wasn’t such a great speed improvement over properly optimised Python. And Python has two advantages: ubiquity and super-readable, simple syntax.

Thx, sounds like a useful read. I mean, Python seems like obvious choice in fMRI processing given existing tools, libraries and community. My main interest in Julia is more curiosity driven. After a quick search I found a Julia NIfTI reader, but nth else.https://github.com/JuliaIO/NIfTI.jl …

If you're asking me, learn one higher and one lower level language at least. So C/C++ and Python, for example, would be a good choice. When you need to write something custom that's fast you can drop into Cython. That's how I do it.

I agree, for those further long the scripting/programming spectrum. For those at the other end (e.g. “plain” psychology), R and Python is maybe a decent mix.
