My laptop recently died on me, and this is my first tweet from my new Dell XPS13 preloaded with Ubuntu. So far, so good! Everything works perfectly out of the box, all media, wireless, peripherals, etc. Take that Linux haters! You noobs just aren't praying to the right gods.

So far I'm happy enough. If I start getting irritated I'll give KDE a try.

I don't think it's vanilla GNOME. It's Unity. You have a sidebar with icons, right? (Not a fan of Ubuntu's default UI — Mint's is better for me.)

(Not a fan of KDE either. On Ubuntu I'd recommend Xfce.)

I don’t find it too bad... but it’s been a long time since I tried KDE (never tried Mint or Xfce), so maybe I don’t know what I’m missing.

Mint is a distro based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian. Xfce is a simple and relatively light weight desktop manager that looks like Gnome used to look.

(What was in brackets was my personal preference, not really relevant unless people are sick of Unity. Some are of course.)
