I almost got the feeling that being told "You're not cut out for research" is some rite of passage. I at least was told I'd never stick around, too.https://twitter.com/tpoi/status/1101205736812621824 …

Ugh you don't. I've been told, as an undergraduate, that I was not cut out for research, and that the best I could do is lab tech (which is already problematic). No one's judgement is perfect on who's cut out for what. https://twitter.com/Rick_Frausto/status/1100947873204559872 …

I was told that ‘we need to take a step back and consider all options, including the one that you leave academia’

I was told similar things, but more out of concern that i should not enter into this without knowing the reality of things (i think).

I always try to have a long conversation about job prospects & difficulties (re almost a requirement to keep moving, longterm job insecurity, etc.) with Master's students who approach me for advice. Best to know what you're getting into & manage expectations.

Also a reason to have post docs in the lab, we know what it's like right now!pic.twitter.com/YbrmKqIjsn

Yup. Sensible postdocs around me were a huge chunk of my mental health support during my PhD. Sources of sage advice of all kinds + and more relatable than the established bigshots.

I also think it's really important to have contact with other labs as well. When I was a PhD student (having come from computer science and thus knew very little psych) meeting and talking to people who did non-modelling stuff was how I learned about psychology.

This is less of an issue in the US (and similar systems) where PhD students undertake classes. But of course class and lab are different environment and 2nd-hand experience in the latter is pretty useful in and of itself too.

This helped shape my idea of what jobs are out there in psychology and what other labs (regardless of topics of research) look like in terms of projects and roles. I decided to stay (at least for now) because I knew others labs had different dynamics, closer to what I wanted.

I'm trying to think if anybody told me: "You can't make it" — I can certainly remember during my PhD interview one of the profs asking if I will be able to cope with my friends doing cocaine (WTF) while I will have to do research. 🤡
