I retweeted something like this before, and no one listened. Is no one concerned about a potentially biased AI vetting research? To me there's ethical issues in here that no one in the #openscience is talking about. Am I crazy?https://twitter.com/B_resnick/status/1100045608038084611 …

"What makes for good science" is a hard question, that evades easy heuristics. Bad studies can appear in prestigious journals (and with hype), snooty institutions can produce p-hacking mills, and so on This might be a question where AI can help https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2019/2/25/18211125/darpa-score-center-for-open-science-ai …

Imho the thought that AI would be able to tell ‘good science’ from ‘bad science’ is naive at best, and potentially dangerous at worst.

I read the initial press release about this from DARPA. They want to use it internally, but of course it will end up being adopted all over the place. Seeing how StatCheck is apparently biased, and that's a much more formalized algorithm, I'm just concerned

I mean I barely trust other people to tell good from bad if their sub-area differs even a tiny bit...

This is one good example of the kind of adverse consequences on scientific policies of the public display of the alleged crisis we have been doing. I've been warning about this for quite a long time now, but it is useless.

To be fair they’re trying to identify reproduceable claims, not necessarily good / bad sci but still, it’s going to get hyped and used in ways that I am afraid will do harm

Yes, agreed, I realize the limited scope of the approach very well, but see the words used in the tweet you quoted. As said, problem I see is in the framing, as with many of the open science discussions.

And the subsequent misuse indeed, which is hidden/justified via the framing.

I’m not imagining this. The thought comes from a specific new development: https://twitter.com/rw_hass/status/1100164489301975043?s=21 … Possibly the main problem here is framing. But that does not mean it’s not troublesome. Public will take away the wrong message. Responsible reporting should prevent this.

Misuse is precisely my concern. Sure, it is often an outcome of hype and pomp, but also of thoughtless public cries.
