But upon re-reading the thread. I know relatively few of the others. So I guess I am not a full member.

Also, given the point of humility. The entire club agrees that we need to be far more humble about what we know ;). In a way, that may be the only thing they have in common.

Let's leave us out of this :-), but I hear a lot of we know so little (I'm not sure that's even true!) but so-and-so (who I am in a club with) is the person who will solve it! It's a bit gross.

One sign of progress may be more focus on ideas rather than personalities.

A twitter prayer: May I go into each thread asking “what can I learn from these people?” and not “how can I convince them and everyone else that I’m right?”

She's talking about people (not herself!) who have already shared directly or indirectly what they think in many cases because their views are mainstream and/or they already have a powerful platform. Let's please not fall into the trap of context collapse.

But I think blanket statements about a complex function/environment like twitter, which has undoubtedly played a very positive role in many respects, is pointless. Important points can be made briefly, or in threads, just not always.

Yeah, blogs are good for some of that and journal articles/preprints good for some of it too... Twitter promotes a bad stance, but I have to say I see it offline too...https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/1098861889403129857 …

Esther Mondragón @twitemp1Musing on yesterday’s thread. Academic T. is a double-edged sword. Although it is far from being the right forum for discussion, its open nature veils hierarchies and equalises opinion, thus offering to those unaware of the real-world power-dynamics, their politics and alliances,Show this thread0 replies 0 retweets 1 likeThanks.
