Also, on that thread, I ultimately found the discussions quite helpful! I joke about my foolishness in engaging, and maybe it didn't alter my opinion in a huge way. But, everyone made me think much harder about the topic and forced me to make my own positions concrete.

To clarify,
@tyrell_turing, I think you're in the category of 'powerful people making strong pronouncements' that@o_guest mentioned in this thread. In my interpretation, she's not worried about how the thread impacted you but how your participation may impact others.1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -

I’m sorry, Jessica, but I don’t follow... all I did was express my opinions on the topic, and I tried hard to never be disparaging of anyone’s comments (with the possible exception of beleaguered Romain, but he’s senior to me). What was the issue with my behaviour on that thread?

Isn't Blake a bit young to be called powerful? I mean I love him and he should be powerful. But is he already perceived as such?

Yeah, I’m actually pretty weak...
But, more generally, even if I were a big wig, I’m having trouble seeing the issue with my participation in the thread... regardless of status, what’s wrong with having strong positions and stating them in a respectful manner?3 replies 0 retweets 7 likes -

I won't repeat what's already been said in the other branches of this thread and also don't endorse all of the criticism. I just wanted to clarify what I perceived as a misinterpretation. Ofc there's nothing wrong with stating opinions,

but there can be harm in stating opinions as facts and being derisive to alternative views, especially as a professor (you don't have to be a big wig to wield power and influence people).

When I saw you say things along the lines of "actually, you're wrong", "don't kid yourself, kid", and "philosophers, the most confused humans" it made me not want to participate, despite being very into the topic. I was grossed out by the tone.

Fair enough. I’m sorry it discouraged you from participating! I didn’t intend/want to do that. But in my defence, those were largely intended as tongue in cheek “let’s scrap!” tone, and a wee bit of combativeness is par for the course in academia.

I just want to say that because it's Twitter (i.e., you have an audience) you are talking not just to the people "in the thread" but everybody. That is why it's important to be aware of everything we covered in this thread.

This is a repeat of what I have said before, but though it was worth saying again. Twitter is not the same as talking with a small group of people.

Yup, I hear you. It is an important lesson that I have been gradually incorporating, but which wasn't my baseline. Because, usually, the reply/comment is directed at specific people. It requires conscious awareness of the public forum, and according modification of behaviour.
