The brette one, I think.

Well, if that's the thread, I can officially say that it ain't a club! It's a very organic group (of opinionated people) formed online. I think I only knew, like, 4-5 people prior to Twitter on that thread...

Also, on that thread, I ultimately found the discussions quite helpful! I joke about my foolishness in engaging, and maybe it didn't alter my opinion in a huge way. But, everyone made me think much harder about the topic and forced me to make my own positions concrete.

To clarify,
@tyrell_turing, I think you're in the category of 'powerful people making strong pronouncements' that@o_guest mentioned in this thread. In my interpretation, she's not worried about how the thread impacted you but how your participation may impact others.1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -

I’m sorry, Jessica, but I don’t follow... all I did was express my opinions on the topic, and I tried hard to never be disparaging of anyone’s comments (with the possible exception of beleaguered Romain, but he’s senior to me). What was the issue with my behaviour on that thread?

Isn't Blake a bit young to be called powerful? I mean I love him and he should be powerful. But is he already perceived as such?

Yeah, I’m actually pretty weak...
But, more generally, even if I were a big wig, I’m having trouble seeing the issue with my participation in the thread... regardless of status, what’s wrong with having strong positions and stating them in a respectful manner?3 replies 0 retweets 7 likes -

I personally think I got great stuff out of those exchanges, as a mere spectator. Some combativeness was definitely nice. It seems to me like there is a lot of confusion, and that discussing it out loud is great, and the more people talking about the underpinnings, the better

BTW, as a grad student, if I haven't participated in these discussions yet, it's definitively not because of the tone, though Twitter may not be the most reliable tone transmitter

I have to say that in private I get very different stuff from others and I think it's really important to bear in mind the sampling bias here. There are people who don't feel comfortable sharing their perspective and they are not just a few people or just students.
