I won't repeat what's already been said in the other branches of this thread and also don't endorse all of the criticism. I just wanted to clarify what I perceived as a misinterpretation. Ofc there's nothing wrong with stating opinions,

but there can be harm in stating opinions as facts and being derisive to alternative views, especially as a professor (you don't have to be a big wig to wield power and influence people).

When I saw you say things along the lines of "actually, you're wrong", "don't kid yourself, kid", and "philosophers, the most confused humans" it made me not want to participate, despite being very into the topic. I was grossed out by the tone.

fwiw I appreciate both views. I personally enjoy the combativeness as long as I can trust there is openness to sincere discussion & no a priori dismissal. I suspect it's because my nature is similar to what I sensed in
@tyrell_turing, because that's what drew me in. 1/1 reply 0 retweets 6 likes -

Because there was this concise point I strongly disagreed upon (meaning and Wittgenstein) and even this call to authority that annoyed me. But that was a convo really enjoyed. As someone new to Twitter I've noticed that I really like the diversity in engagement available 2/

But the diversity comes with a caveat as with all public fora, and one that demands an awareness of the effects of the tones and language we use so we can keep a welcoming and open community. Basic respect might allow for diversity in threads without community's exclusion. 3/3

Yup, good point. And look:
@tsonj, FWIW, I’m totally happy to have my tone checked from time to time! I’m an intense person, and it’s easy for me to veer into “you wanna go?” territory. But I always mean well and never want to actually silence other voices.3 replies 0 retweets 11 likes -

I wouldn't have said anything if I didn't think you meant well! In fact, it's only because I thought you meant well that I said anything.

Nice one, Jessica. It's really rare to see somebody do what you just did IMHO.

Also so nice we all get along in this thread even when/if we disagree on small things!
