Let's not let this happen [or get worse in cases] to #OpenScience:
"In retrospect, it’s unsurprising that a lot of New Atheism devolved into reactionary, antifeminist, and even white supremacist thought, because it was never really about the things it claimed to be about." 1/n

I def. recognized the dynamics described in this article, having been involved in online atheist communities (Usenet, IRC, early skeptic websites and discussion forums) in the 90s and early 00s. At some point many asked "What happened? These aren't my people." I associated it >

I have to say, also having been involved in "freethinkers" and "(new) atheist" as well as "rationalist" groups (two of which I was admin/mod on and both had 2k+ members) I saw the slide into right-wing-ness.
-
It was very interesting to watch and that's probably why I can catch stuff now so early on. I am not unique in that obviously, but I have experienced that slide into what was then things like anarchocapitalism and on and on (before alt-right was called that).
-
I have even experienced a Nazi-theme "coup" against me in one of the groups.

It was let's say very memorable.

Amused I'm getting likes from the few sensible people there at the time! Twitter's algorithms are funny! Hi, friends!

I've been thinking a lot about this because I talk to these guys a lot on Twitter and they are really a trip. I link it to their socialized beliefs about status and ability (which are very gendered) and a branch of sort of misogyny apologetics which plays into those beliefs.
-
You take these guys like Pordan Jeterson who have doctorates in psychoanalytic theory who can lay out a totally irrational case for misogyny and convince them it's logic. It's basically religion.
-
You see it in conspiracy theories. It's basically deontology disguised as knowledge.
