not only is this a duck, but it’s the first instance of a completely bassackwards bar chart that I’ve ever seen! Photo from @MrTimDunn via @Minkovsky.pic.twitter.com/TbTpgBAfTI

If the x-axis was distance covered in 1h (or other specific amount of time), maybe it would be correct?

Yes, you could do this with a nonlinearly transformed axis (1/t) to depict speed instead of time. Speed is more *visually* salient, but the time is more important information.

Sure, that's all good and well—but not if you LABEL THE BARS AS TIME.

It’s not uncommon to label bars using untransformed values while using transformed values for coordinates (eg, a log transform). The only thing that makes it weird here is that the transformation is not an increasing function.

Even for a graph designed for the public rather than for a technical publication?

If anyone would get confused, seems plausible it would be people who see lots of bar graphs and are used to certain conventions. Bar graph conventions are learned, not innate.

I guess I’d like to see evidence that “regular people” would be confused by this.

Yeah, I think it could be better, but I'm not convinced it's THAT confusing.

yeah same. I can see it representing speed (despite the labelling of time)
