Honestly people pushing to get $25k a year instead of $21k isnt what makes it unequal ;-) it may be a symptom of a weird cultural view on money though!

That's not what I mean at all. I mean the fact that you all don't get a good wage and have to negotiate makes an unequal playing as some people are better at asking for stuff and getting it than others.

Oh I understand. The problem in the US is that we demand people to negotiate to get things AND tell them they are paid what they are worth. It is logically inconsistent ideology and terribly ineffective. But there is actually less of it in academia than other jobs, I think.
