Thanks, yes, it's not been easy to save up but I feel it's been necessary so that when I finish the PhD a small gap between study and work is not going to tip me over the edge. I want a month off!

Smart planning. I had zero time off. Fortunately moving post PhD I could crash with
@caosnes in Leeds whilst doing a shittily-paid post-PhD but NotPostDoc job. Had zero savings though, still struggling to save tbh now that I'm renting solo and getting trains everywhere.2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -
Yeah I would not have been able to save anything without doing teaching on top of the PhD. The research council funding is not really enough to even live on in Bristol without struggle. If I only had that I wouldn't have seen my family in 4 years.

Saving money during phd while paying rent is bonkers. Wow. That's impressive.

Honestly I think the suggestion that anyone can save a deposit is a little insensitive but then maybe I am over sensitive. You gotta be pretty privileged to get there. For me to have even saved 10k I would've had to put 30% of income into savings, when 60% of it goes to rent&bills

The only way anybody can "save money" in the UK for a deposit is either they live with their parents/partner and/or their parents/partner buy/s them a place. That's it. That's how I have a house, partner. That's how my friends have flats, parents. That's the UK.

In the USA... I hear you get paid more. I also hear their GDP is much higher.

I hear their houses don't come with dry rot and rodents too.

I do know people who bought houses in the USA in their 2nd year of PhD. So I get why there's confusion.

I looked into this and they were funded by a pharma company. So I assume they had a big salary.

By the end of my PhD I had enough savings to buy a house. This was in Denmark where salary is great.
