right project. So even with two part time jobs and the PhD, I have only managed to save an average of about 1k annually. Whatever I've saved I've usually ended up spending at Christmas so I could go see family in Finland (those holidays cost ~1K) and on my citizenship.
I do know people who bought houses in the USA in their 2nd year of PhD. So I get why there's confusion.

To be honest, if I'd known all this... I'd never have emigrated to the UK.

This is entirely, 100% dependent on where you live. There are very few places where you can be comfortable on a PhD stipend. Those are places where houses cost about the same as a Mercedes.

They were in Vermont IIRC.

Yeah, I don't know much about prices there. But most doctoral researchers I know are struggling.

Also it's not like I know. Probably their parents gave them money too.
-
I'm guessing yeah. In most cities here, like in Europe, buying a home even on professional salary is really hard.

I looked into this and they were funded by a pharma company. So I assume they had a big salary.

By the end of my PhD I had enough savings to buy a house. This was in Denmark where salary is great.
-
I'll emigrate there next. LOLSOB
