I have a bank loan and it's not from the UK. I don't think UK student loan really counts as a loan. I know there are some PhD studentships that pay almost post doc salaries and I seriously regret I didn't consider this when I applied for PhDs. I was really just going for the

I do know people who bought houses in the USA in their 2nd year of PhD. So I get why there's confusion.

To be honest, if I'd known all this... I'd never have emigrated to the UK.

This is entirely, 100% dependent on where you live. There are very few places where you can be comfortable on a PhD stipend. Those are places where houses cost about the same as a Mercedes.

Yeah, I don't know much about prices there. But most doctoral researchers I know are struggling.

I'm guessing yeah. In most cities here, like in Europe, buying a home even on professional salary is really hard.
