If you read the thread and responses to the tweet, you will see that some of us (often students of color) come from low income families and use this as an opportunity to ask for assistance with moving expenses, guaranteed TAships, etc.

That is definitely a silver-lining but it's still upsetting, especially since some people might not even know about this.
-
That was your point of course!

Honestly people pushing to get $25k a year instead of $21k isnt what makes it unequal ;-) it may be a symptom of a weird cultural view on money though!
-
That's not what I mean at all. I mean the fact that you all don't get a good wage and have to negotiate makes an unequal playing as some people are better at asking for stuff and getting it than others.

Some places do this, especially ones that are not quite the most prestigious but really want to up their diversity numbers and poach students from the most prestigious unis. It’s all a hot mess
-
Mess indeed!

Had no idea this was an option!

It's kind of upsetting to think (in the UK this is controlled) that you can negotiate this. Some people *ehem* will know and be equipped.

Not many public ones can. At those you can negotiate your % appointment (roughly the hours you're expected to work) but the rates are pretty fixed for TA/RA positions.
-
Thanks for clarifying!
-
Likely also depends on discipline — both here & UMN, stipends are standardized within the department or college. Almost everyone funded has the standard 50% appointment. I’m not aware of any funding sources for e.g. moving.

This is by no means universally true! The thread it came from was multi-disciplinary and aimed at the ethos of, “can’t hurt to ask” — many of the anecdotes were from areas that don’t routinely offer full funding, for example.
-
The thread is great. I just was very surprised.

It’s only for first gen students of color. And PhDs are one of the most underpaid students, please give them a break.
-
That's not my point. Of course, yes, we deserve more pay.

That's not true at all schools and programs. In our program, our funding is set by the Grad College, and the only way to offer students more funding is if the lab is going to fund the student using an external grant, instead of university funding.
-
Definitely not the case for all! But it is there in some and, as you note, there are disparities available almost everywhere (eg, with grant funding).
-
Yes, disparities all around. One I've heard is whether the program funds students in the early years of the program, the later years of the program, both, or neither. Part of this I think is administrators trying to get the PI to fund students, rather than the university.
