I voted I prefer private, but that’s on a personal basis. I am aware and accept that once a paper is out it should be discussed openly (w respect), since this is how science and scientists progress. Maybe ‘respect’ is key to bridge the perspectives?

Just because something is, e.g., "open data" doesn't make it ethical. A good example is what https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Emil_Kirkegaard … did with opening up, unethically WITHOUT CONSENT, the okcupid data he stole.
