i don’t have a microwave at home. once in a while i bring lunch that i’d like to heat up at work. since i have no intuition as to how the goddamn thing is supposed to work, i end up overheating it. my mouth is scorched and my food lacks taste. technology doesn’t agree with me

The key is to heat the food up in small increments of time and then feel how hot it is. You can always add more heating time if necessary. Also, use a medium power setting if possible. The microwave heats up the water molecules so the water content of food matters.

Food surface also matters. If you heat something that occupies a small/large portion of a plate or container, you need to give it less/more time. Apparently, you are not supposed to heat up rice - it leads up to harmful bacteria proliferating.

Wow! Sounds too complicated. I use it so rarely that it wouldn’t make sense to even try to learn.

Tangent, I don't think it's the heating? I think it's keeping cooked rice outside the fridge? Be careful as that's not safe to eat.https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/food-and-diet/can-reheating-rice-cause-food-poisoning/ …
