How many dudes really consciously think about citing women? You really should! Your reference lists are telling.

I'm citing the works I need to cite for my writing. I don't care about who wrote it, really. Are there reasons why it matters who wrote a well done piece of scientific literature? Should there be such reasons in the first place?

Women systematically have their work overlooked. There was a recent case of a woman 1st author and 2 male coauthors, and the work kept getting attributed to the two male authors. So taking a look at female work is just an attempt to overcome unconscious bias (that we all have)

I usually only look at the last names in the citation and get on reading. I always cite full/according to APA. If there's multiple, I cite "first author et al". It's how I learned citing. I think that's how u rule out the unconscious. By rules.

That's a really good point, except that other people's unconscious bias has influenced the references and work that you seek out. It takes people purposely advancing the work of women to affect the balance of cite-able work that comes to the level of awareness

I see your point but that is a relic of the past interfering with today's work. A lot of past psychologists were male due to social circumstances at the time. And they put out the groundwork people refer to, which reflects in citations. This might be the opposite in 20 years.

Call me impatient but I’m real uncomfortable with waiting 20 years *opens computer, sets pomodoro timer*

Sure. But the only way that actually matters is because impact/high citation and not so much quality still is important for job opportunities, esp in academia. Take that away (and that's happening atm, at least in Germany) and citations are basically meaningless on a personal lvl
