Cross validation. Out of sample prediction. Fresh experimental tests following publication of the model.

right. all reasonable strategies for avoiding overfitting. and in their absence, one's results shouldn't be taken as seriously.

the prereg argument is not "your work is meaningless unless preregged". it's "don't pretend your work means the same thing as work that's been preregged". which people historically have done, and continue to do. Shiffrin's piece is completely unapologetic about this.

this attitude should really worry anyone who does modeling, because it makes it impossible to reward people who actually work hard to stay honest and do modeling that respects the meaning of the inferential statistics.

So now you imply that people who don’t preregister aren’t honest. This is the problem.

nonsense. it's very easy to be honest without prereg. you just have to start your article by saying "the work reported here should be viewed as exploratory except where otherwise indicated. don't take any of our inferential statistics at face value."

All my experiences so far suggest that nobody (not even a modeler) is able to withstand the forces of hindsight bias, confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, and a platoon of other biases. So what should we do about that? Prereg is one solution.

I agreed up to the last sentence. Again, IMO we need to lift this discussion to a higher level. These biases play out in so many ways, and not all of them are "solved" with pre-reg. It would be good if there is a clearer qualification when&where pre-reg applies & when&where not.

Analogy: Hammers are useful for hammering, but they serve as poor or even dysfunctional tools for many of the other activities we also need in carpentry.

I think that gif nicely summarizes several misunderstandings about this topic. So in that sense it is indeed very apt.

I actually think we don't disagree. We're just talking about slightly different things - you are talking about the types of modeling you do and I'm talking about the types I do. All we need to do is recognize that there are diff, equally valuable tools for diff purposes.
