Any labs that have done this and have experience/protocols to share would be great. Perhaps @mcxfrank @ProfData and others might have thoughts? I'd especially like to hear how you might deal with data that might be private. @o_guest and other heavy github users as well?https://twitter.com/samhforbes/status/1086314776769236992 …

Dear science Twitter: Does anyone have any suggestions/ experience to share about setting up a lab (cf individual) GitHub? Any clever life hacks would be appreciated.

I found it really helpful to have a private repository that contains internal lab info, like procedures for this and that and password file for ancillary shared accounts. Those kind of files get updated a lot and people need to make sure to have the latest version.

It's key to get people not using binary files (e.g., xls and doc) for files that are frequently updated as they will bloat in git. Instead, csv and markdown.

Have a public area for sharing code and such with the outside world. I tried setting up private spaces for each person, but many people already have their own way of doing things. I stopped resisting this, just making sure all the work eventually ends up in a lab repository.

Others will have better and more advice, but I think the most important thing is just getting people to use git, offer them some basic support, and have some basic lab structure to it, making clear what is public and private.

This is really helpful - particularly the advice on private repositories and protocols. Thanks so much!

Thanks @ProfData. Like hinted but not explicitly said, should be a repo (or more) per project or publication, not a repo per person.
