This was really wonderful & well-written. I have also read @EJWagenmakers recent blog post on preregistration in modeling work, and I am moved most strongly by your argument for limited resources.

Instead of trying to be really certain that a surprising effect is true, I like the goal of trying to explain things that we already find interesting (how people learn language, or how people have social interactions). "How does it work?" is often the most interesting question

I think @EJWagenmakers point that you need to test models that are developed through exploration on new data is a fair one, and it represents a particular stage of developing a scientific explanation. But I also feel that psychology needs explanations more than effects right now

I have always harbored the hope that finding robust effects could lead us to ultimately develop theory by laying out what a good theory needs to account for. I still think that's true, and it does sometimes seem like an incisive experiment can help determine which theory is right

My secret concern in all this is that I don't quite have the math chops to contribute to psychology in the way that I want. I've got much more training in designing and running simple factorial experiments to establish effects than I do in formal modeling.

I took a grad class in ev modeling. Turns out I'm really really bad at it. But I got a lot out of it: 1) When ev authors cite modeling papers, my skepticism level goes up, because it ain't that simple. 2) I've come to terms with largely being an observation/find effects guy.

I think that modellers share a lot of blame here. Historically, it's been easy to throw around models as unassailable bastions of theory-truth, with inscrutable equations as a bulwark against criticism. We need to change the culture of how models are communicated

OK, but what is an “inscrutable” equation? I once had a manuscript desk-rejected from a general-readership journal for the equation E[RT] = mu + tau. At what point does it become the non-modelers’ fault?

Agreed that there's also some responsibility on the other end as well, to not react with fear at the simplest equation.

There are many cultural issues: "Rhetoric and pressure from formal societies like the BPS [...] We just can’t fit it all in and coding is seen as not that relevant or worthy" http://neuroplausible.com/programming  Coding can just as easily be replaced with turbo basic maths in that extract.

I'd like to reiterate the positive message we started with: these skills can be taught, provided that we value them. Problem is that we don't. This contributes to a skewed view of science & reviewers lacking the background to appreciate modeling & theoretical work. Vicious cycle.

Always value your thoughts, Joshua, but understand time and resource limits all too well. Just chip in when you have more time again; I suspect we will be having this discussion for quite some time longer ;)
