Reading the @ProfData paper and @KriegeskorteLab review what really strikes me is that both assume that readout neurons have access to beta parameters. They seem to agree on that. :/

Question from ignorance: what are the beta parameters?

Estimates of "neural activity" related to some stimulus at each voxel. They are noisy indirect measures of the pooled activity of thousands or millions of neurons. Researchers take vectors of them and use multivariate stats to study neural representation. 1/2

The underlying assumption is that the transformation from the space of neural firing rates to beta parameters doesn't affect properties like angles and distances, so that we can compute those values using the beta parameters and make inferences about the neural representation 2/2

Thanks, I just didn't know the term. I see why you're worried. A readout neuron would only pool from a few neurons in each voxel, hence the average value would not be that informative, right?

That's part of the issue. But even if the readout neuron received projections from all the neurons in all the voxels under study, I don't think that what that neuron "sees" and what we see in voxels are equal. The transformation from neural to voxel space is not trivial.

No-one has checked this computationally? I mean, with simulations/calculation of various neutral response functions and activity-to-voxel transforms?

Yes! This is what I was expecting when I started reading. I feel like talking about the "best" similarity measure requires linking similarity in the neural encoding space to similarity in the measurement space. Allows for better benchmarks, no?

Exactly what I was thinking about, if the fMRI approach works at all, the neutral code to fMRI transform must be smooth enough. However, I expect generalization tests with units not used in model fitting to be crucial for this evaluation
