I think that some of these folks are so used to being Right about the proper way to do science that they're losing the ability to self reflect.

Olivia Guest | Ολίβια Γκεστ @o_guestThe reason "bro" is such a good descriptive term is because unlike some of the other things said about the worst of#bropenscience this one sticks in a way they really don't like. I'm for#openscience. That's why I care to criticise the frolicking brobots and their silliness.Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 12 likes -

Yes, the SIPS folks have the best of intentions, but it doesn't work out in everyone's best interests because of the slightly aggressive culture. It turns out, IMO that the tone debate matters a lot.

The thing that blows my mind about the tone debate is {takes greaves of tone off} IT"S NOT THAT FUCKING HARD {back on} to have okay tone, even in a devastating content critique. I'm not sure the flip case is true.

Well the real difficulty with taking tone seriously is that it limits the content of in-group banter (which doesn't remain in-group on Twitter). You need to be more mindful of all dialog, not just the content critique.

The irony is they said Brad's tone was the problem when it's the same group of people who say that tone doesn't matter. Either way, the problem with the tone debate originally with this crowd was that it was a false framing.

@IrisVanRooij has made this point, as have I. Tone policing, for example, is when somebody punches down to tell an oppressed person how to express themselves when the system fucks them.

The tone debate, as they discuss it, is not about that even though they co-opt a bunch of stuff from the arguments again tone policing. Basically, they made a mess initially IMHO and (subsequently) exposed quite a bit of the double standards at play.
