What's the first philosophical question you can remember thinking? Mine: Why am I not someone else? What makes me *me*?

How do my friends know I exist when they’re not with me? is the first thing I remember thinking that would be addressed in a philosophy class. But when I was much younger I recall wondering what made some numbers big numbers and I think that was the germ of a philosophical worry.

I also remember, when I was ~7, wondering if the way English sounded to me was the way French sounded to native French speakers etc - i.e. if there's a phenomenology of "comprehensible language" and everyone is having that experience even while they can't understand each other.

Slightly related, but I'm bilingual and grew up in a bilingual household. There were times before caller ID I'd pick up the landline and it'd be gibberish until I realised they were speaking the other language, not the one I'd been expecting to hear.

Is this anything like not recognising someone because they are out of the usual context in which you meet them? (a common problem I have!)

Only very slightly, the only time I don’t recognise people is out of context when I haven’t seen them recently

(which is why I thought your context-dependent language skills sounded similar!)

I haven't had that in decades though. It was cool though!

Our French teacher gave it to us aged 14/15 as a “translation exercise” and it took us most of the 35 minute lesson to work out the joke :-)
