I find the "conscious uncoupling" that happens every time I criticise something in the specific brand of open science my field does, neuro/psych (although mostly psych, I guess), really interesting.
Hey — I guess not everybody wants to be bubble-free and engage in dialogue.

I am for open science and I want us to get it right. Criticism, dialogue, thinking deeply about new and old systems is vital to get there.

I don't know what to say or do about their disengagement because on some level I get it. On the other hand though, it's weird to see this level of self-sorting. Yes, exchanges can be tiring, boring even, but to withdraw from the same network through a series of unfollows...

I dunno, I've no idea what that will do the exchanges. Anyway, I respect such things and often tend to unfollow mutuals who unfollow me out of respect for that.

Speaking with others, I see they get the same treatment, which leads to believe it's a funny situation we are in. I guess there's research on this, although I bet it's more on much larger groups (e.g., democrats VS republicans) than minor rifts within open science within a field.

I really struggle w/ understanding the 'crickets'. Especially, from ppl from whom I expect better. It is painful / frustrating. Perhaps you are right. I know e.g. I am muted by people who mistake my views as anti-open science.

Iris, I feel you. "Mistake" is an interesting work to use here. I do not know if I agree exactly with the pragmatics of it here, as I understand it.

I think that, on the balance of evidence, the whole "Manichaeistic (e.g., “I’m for open science, you’re not”)" rhetoric — to quote @seb_bobadilla's blog http://bradlove.org/blog/open-review-2 … — is an adaptive (no idea if purposeful, likely not) strategy that certain people develop.

This us VS them tactic is super oldschool BTW. Nothing new to see. As I said here I think it's a classic thing they do but in their own special way.https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/1084013681615269888 …

Olivia Guest | Ολίβια Γκεστ @o_guestReplying to @DaniRabaiottiThere's a trend on Twitter, or a style, of rhetoric wherin people are permanently shitting themselves instead of taking an issue and thinking carefully about it. They are basically JAQing off or trolling instead of trying to understand an issue (think before you type).1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes - 5 more replies
