It's crap to see someone driven off Twitter by insults and harassment of the crime of...giving her student a pink pen to use as a in joke with her class. Sometimes it's worth engaging in good faith before you start abusing someone.

In my workshops I often get asked how newbies avoid abuse. Until now I've always said don't be a jerk (sexist, racist, ableist, homophobic, rude or mean). But it feels like I now have to add qualify your teaching behaviour in full when you discuss it to that list.

Maybe before you tell someone to quit their job or turned to poorly veiled threats you should engage in good faith and ask about how and why they do something. If their behaviour still falls short then it is entirely possible to criticise politely but firmly.

I mean just wtf science twitter. I always told people we were the nice part of Twitter. Be kinder. Jesus. Qualifier: (I do not expect minorities to engage politely with others engaging in bad faith that shit ain't it)

I totally agree. But sadly, at least what I've been seeing, the people doing this don't agree it's bad, don't see it, and don't care.

That's great but I'm under the impression that generally they (in cases I've seen) disagree.

To be clear, and again on a case by case basis, I do believe that letting stuff go appropriately is a healthy way forward. Pretty much anybody within my field I've disagreed or otherwise clashed with on Twitter I'm kind of chilled with eventually in my mind. I don't hold grudges.

Sadly, though, more for the field and for them, it's not the case generally. I think most people do hold grudges if I own them on Twitter.
JKJK I mean if we disagree on Twitter.

There are some Jordan Peterson fans, serial creeps who I speak out against (in)directly who are kind of gross, but in general, so what if we had an argument on Twitter? I dunno. People should be more chill and realise there's nuance and you can't crap yourself over everything.

I'm certainly not infallible and I do not believe anybody is perfect. Life is a dialogue or as some like to say a debate (to use more alt right vocab).

That's the thing. We forget to give people space to make mistakes.
