It's crap to see someone driven off Twitter by insults and harassment of the crime of...giving her student a pink pen to use as a in joke with her class. Sometimes it's worth engaging in good faith before you start abusing someone.

Something about constantly shitting yourself over something instead of "oh, there's nuance here, lemme think" makes me think of Umberto Eco's description of fascism.https://www.nybooks.com/articles/1995/06/22/ur-fascism/ …

You can't sustain an online movement that has no coherent ideology (mild alt right BS) without constant "holy shit" or "we're under attack". Reminds me also of political parties like Putin's which are ideologically vacuous too.

Maybe this is what happens when people are bored. That is, people get sucked into lazy BS takes. And because they are just looking for the next dog pile they can easily be corrupted by the influence of abusive forces or ways of engagement.

I think part of it is also an in group mentality - oh I've seen people calling out this behaviour before people will like it if I do it again. Even if the two situations are of course different because people are different. That's why when I engage I often say 'are you saying...'

Yeah, I'm a huge believer in case by case analysis.
