Open is good right? In response to @KriegeskorteLab's open review of our work on neural similarity, I offer you "An open review of Niko Kriegeskorte", which is a less tedious read that touches on how difficult it is do something novel in this field.http://bradlove.org/blog/open-review …

Yep, plus hard to pretend these are honest reviews when they are ultimately intended as blog posts to promote a certain brand of research. That is an inherent conflict of interest. One can't wear all these hats at once, especially when wielding power.

what's the relevant context? he linked to the paper. if I were to publish a critique in a different "real" journal, would you also complain that that's self-serving, and I should have done it as a comment on the preprint?

He reviewed our paper knowing he would write a blog post. I am all for critiques of work, especially when published. Like real open review, usually the original authors can reply as well.

so if he'd reviewed it knowing he was going to submit a rebuttal to another journal, that wouldn't be a COI? or if he was just a reviewer who wanted to torpedo your work? I don't get it.

Don't worry about it Tal, it will all make sense at some point. Maybe try to not make it a logic puzzle game and just step back. Fading out of here! :)
