clearly, that wasn’t the issue. I am apparently not good enough to know the real issue, or for anyone at AFS-WD (like their pres or editors) to contact me. Additionally, I find it ironic that ppl who bandy abt how ‘woke’ they are are telling the jilted party to seek out closure

Let me be clear-like cellophane, if you will. This is NOT good praxis. Reposting the blog posts wasn’t good practice from UWMad, and requesting then rejecting a piece from me about it (and telling me to seek closure) was not good praxis from AFS-WD

Both of these actions show a real devaluation of the labor of URMs on these organizations’ parts. And the fact that neither org was professional enough to send out an actual apology to the people affected doesn’t help this optic.

It didn’t and doesn’t matter to these orgs that the unique context of URM lives creates the content that they so crave, in this new era of slowly lurching towards justice

They want the glory of our stories&our successes; w/o the concurrent burden of respecting our humanity and our labor. They want to be us while pretending we don’t exist-a scenario where the boat isn’t rocked but they get to feel like they braved the rapids of change

I literally worked on the AFS-WD piece and through the edits their envoy sent me after the funeral of my Chavez family. Would they have been so coy about seeking closure if they cared about my humanity? I would hope not, but who knows in academia?

This is part of a bigger pattern in academia,so dont get it twisted and think you can sip this tea and feel self righteous. Next time you discount the labor of URM folks, or presume them incompetent, ask yourself If this was labor from a majoritarian, would I still act this way?

Wow. A small chance at something positive coming from this at least.
