The difference being that your perspective is that people are more in control of their actions and responsible as such. I don’t think people generally are that intelligent.

We completely agree. I don't think so either. But we're talking about scientists who do indeed get it.

The context here is scientists who are for sure "clever enough" whatever that means because I see them get it and even use it to their advantage. But they then purposefully pull the ladder up behind them.

I would never say "people are not that intelligent" but the general spirit behind your comment, I still agree with. Never attribute to malice, etc. But with evidence and I'm this subsample of people, we can easily attribute purposeful behaviour.
