Ouch, that's a pretty salty sum to need to collect for 1 trip. I've contributed and I also have a couple of people from that region on my team, I'll share at work.

I just realised your *conf* ticket is not free. Wtf is it with academic conferences - you're creating value for them by speaking! I hope you reach the goal very quickly.

Yes, that's why it's so costly for me! It's 400 euros the entrance even if you are presenting!!! Not to mention the airfare...

Heya, just wrapping up loose Twitter ends before a break. Congrats on getting the crowdfunder completed!! Do you need any other help? Legal; visa stuff for visiting the country; tips from people who used to or currently live in Cyprus; other unexpected money expenses; sth else?

This is the hotel the conference will be hosted:https://goo.gl/maps/KtGPFTga5ZS2 … … but it costs an arm and a leg. I found this one really close to and with a more accessible price: https://goo.gl/maps/rUWH3vZh2wt … … My question for locals is: is it safe for me walk alone from one to another?

OK, I'll ping a couple of people I know about both questions, feel free to add if you think of something else over the weekend.

I guess it depends what you mean by safe to walk. I'll try to give you more details so you can decide.

On the one hand, most people do not walk to places, but this is because there are no sidewalks/pavements and because (in summer) it is too hot to do so and because everybody has a car and there is no public transport.

On the other hand, I'd walk if I could in Cyprus BUT the distances are long (this isn't like London, where I live now where a typical walk wouldn't be more then say 20 mins max). AND the walk would be awful in many cases (no safe place to walk near cars, pollution maybe, etc.)

My only concern in renting a car is having to drive on the other side of the road. I guess I'll have a couple funny stories to share after Cyprus....

You might also want to be aware that driving is quite dangerous. But based on this list you will see "quite dangerous" is when I compare it to the UK.
