Twitter hive-mind: Does anyone know of any studies that have investigated whether reproducibility fails either due to a lack of software availability, or a failure of software/code itself? @koen_hufkens #openscience #opensource

I don't know of any studies. In my experience few people download software when it's available -that's why we made web calculator: http://fpr-calc.ucl.ac.uk/  The biggest problem may be people misunderstand the results of using software that they haven't written and don't understand

It depends what you mean by reproducibility! I've got some threads, as well as published work on this issue. See:https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/1068178972658274305?s=19 …

"However useful it is to be able to re-run code from the past, it is often secondary to doing good science because checking that the spec is generally correct — i.e., the theory is actually computationally captured — is more important to science."

So we can reduce the question in the OP to: "Could sharing [...] code harm reproducibility?" and answer with "Very much so, in certain specific cases which have and do arise quite frequently, sadly."

This all looks super useful, thanks! Was for a discussion section for a paper, which you'd be more than welcome to contribute to if you like! :)
